Foreword

This account of Robert Renals experiences in the First World War has been written as part of his family's history. It is, of course, not only his story but a narrative, albeit a very brief one, of all who served in the Devon Yeomanry. The discomforts and hardships endured are difficult to assimilate by those of us who have never confronted such conditions. Their bravery is without doubt comparable to any of the multitude of brave deeds carried out by all serving personnel in the theatres of war. It is hoped that this narrative, although fashioned as a personal chronicle of one soldier, will be seen as a tribute to the whole regiment.
